Last week as I was walking home from my bus stop, I heard a lovely soft 'warbly' song coming from above my head. I looked up to discover my local neighborhood Flicker couple mating on the telephone wire above the street.

When they spotted me, all activity and noise stopped - and they froze in position, silent, but still swaying with the wire's movement. After I was a house or so past them, they started up again, and the female left in a flash a few moments later.

They've done that "silent freeze" many times before as I walkd under them on the wires, but they've just been sitting there together before. This time I caught them at an awkward moment!

I'm not sure where they're nesting but I'm so happy to see them in the neighborhood. They make me bubble with happiness inside when I watch them. Guess they're my favorite bird these days!
