The "public viewing" Burrowing Owls are most easily seen east of Othello along Lemaster Road. From Main St which becomes Cunningham Road go east of Highway 17 for 2 miles to Lemaster, turn left (north) and go about a half mile to where the irrigation circle on the west side of the road comes up to a concrete irrigation ditch. There are 3 or 4 pair of owls using burrows under the concrete ditch, on both sides of the pivot. Now, with this information going public to more than 1000 Tweeters, I hope that anyone coming over to see them will not do something unscrupulous like driving within several feet of the owls or "pushing" them until they flush. Stay in your vehicle! They should be easily visible and can be photographed from the east half of the gravel road, with light best in the morning. Young should be coming out soon, the earliest broods from pairs that overwintered. And be sure to respect other users of the road, including field access for the farmers. If you happen to see a banded owl, please contact me with as precise a location as possible. Thanks.

I will be on the Columbia Plateau (Moses Lake to Othello area) next week, and I've heard there is a colony of burrowing owls in the area. Does anyone know areas where there is a good chance of encountering them? Also, I'll be in the Walla Walla to Lewiston, ID area for a few days. Are there any hotspots or migrant traps in those areas that will be good to check out. I've never been in this part of the state before, so directions will be helpful. Thanks.
