I've been living out here in north Mason County for just over 4 years now.
There are mountain quail breeding here no doubt. Every year I've seen
babies in various areas of the rural subdivision I'm in and have seen them
in my yard.
I have also seen mountain quail along a couple other roads in the area but
not seen babies with those quail. No doubt they must be breeding as their
numbers seem to be steady if not growing. From my residence during their
spring calling time I've heard up to 6 birds calling at one time. With the
expansive timber harvesting leaving behind brushy areas as well as the
christmas tree plantations around here there seems to be plenty brushy/open
habitat for them.
Also, it's good to hear from another birder in the Belfair area. Hurray for
quail!!!!
