My neighbor on Treasure Island (Grapeview), SE of Allyn just reported
this spring a pair of Mountain Quail on the island for the first time ever.

I just came home from dinner and saw 2 Mountain Quail by my front
deck. They ran into the brush but as soon as I was inside, they came
out again and began foraging around a dead, rotting stump. It was fun
watching them kick up the leaves and even settle down right outside
my window, resting motionless for a while. I notice that they are on
Audubon's watchlist, as their habitat is declining. My property is
full of alder and dense thicket, and it has a water source (spring).
I wonder what the chances of them nesting here are!

I've been living out here in north Mason County for just over 4 years now.
There are mountain quail breeding here no doubt. Every year I've
seen babies in various areas of the rural subdivision I'm in and have
seen them in my yard.

I have also seen mountain quail along a couple other roads in the
area but not seen babies with those quail. No doubt they must be
breeding as their numbers seem to be steady if not growing. From my
residence during their spring calling time I've heard up to 6 birds
calling at one time. With the expansive timber harvesting leaving
behind brushy areas as well as the christmas tree plantations around
here there seems to be plenty brushy/open habitat for them.

Also, it's good to hear from another birder in the Belfair
area. Hurray for quail!!!!
