Hello all,
The Snowy Owl is still at the west end of Stateline road where it turns
south and you go west on Umapine Road. The Owl was on the north side of the
road but still in Oregon. The amazing thing is the bird is in an Asparagus
field where there are at least 2 dozen pickers at work - sometimes within 30
ft. of the bird. It appears to have an injured right eye - may be a reason
why it didn't head north. Also - there were 17 Red-tailed Hawks and 11
Swainson's Hawks within a half mile of this bird - evidently the rodent
population is still very high! Many of the Swainson's are first year
birds - really striking!
On another note I had a Great Gray Owl adult with two chicks up in Columbia
County this morning while doing point counts. There is heavy logging going
on there and in Garfield Co. The School Fire became a good excuse to clear
cut many acres of forest - we see big beautiful ponderosa pine going by
truckload after truckload. Some have black patches on - many don't. So sad.
Good birding, MerryLynn
