Birders,

I have just learned of a possible BRISTLE-THIGHED CURLEW that
was seen yesterday evening (May 23) about 7:45 PM at Iona Island.
The bird was seen feeding along the shoreline between the South
Jetty and North Jetty. In flight, it showed a bright buffy rump and tail,
contrasting with the brown back. It was last seen near the base of the
North Jetty.

For the record, a BRISTLE-THIGHED CURLEW was seen and
photographed the previous day (May 22) on the beach at Gearhart, near
Astoria, OR. Weather conditions are similar to those in May 1998
when several B.T. Curlews were seen at various localities in Oregon,
Washington, and N.W. California.

The Iona bird may or may not still be in the area. However, I would advise
all observers to carefully check any WHIMBRELS in case one of
them might be a BRISTLE-THIGHED!
