At about 11 a.m. today while picking apples with John and Pat Willits on their Carrot Farm, about a mile southeast of the Dungeness River mouth, seven large swans flew by us rather low and about 200-300 feet east of us. We had no binocs handy, the light and angle weren't great, so we couldn't really study their head shapes closely, and I couldn't hear them very well. But past experience with swans here and their long necks and bulkier, SAC-bomber flight gizz seemed more like Trumpeters than Tundras. Can't be sure, but one of them also seemed slightly grayer than the others and may have been a cygnet. These are first swans that the Willits and I have seen here this winter and November 1st seems a good bit earlier than they usually show up around here.
