Greetings Tweeters,
I just returned from a work trip to NE Washington and was able to check out
some of the birds along the way. It was really sort of a stop en route sort
of affair, so I would not say I covered any area thoroughly. I did pass
through the Grand Coulee though and was able to stop and scan from a few
spots. Most noteworthy was an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull at the south
end of Blue Lake among the Herring, Ring-billed and California Gulls also
present. This is no doubt the same individual that was reported previously
by Tom Aversa in October. The bird was present both Wednesday and today.
On Wednesday there was also a Pacific Loon in the same area, and today I did
not see the loon but a female Red-breasted Merganser was there. At the
South end of the next lake north of Blue Lake (Sun Lake ?) today there was
an adult male White-winged Scoter seen from a pull off from Highway 17.
Other notable sightings included 30 or so Bohemian Waxwings just west of
Wilber (Hwy 2), 4 Snow Buntings on Forest Road 1936 in Pend Oreille County
(east of Ione), and a couple of Northern Shrikes just outside of Colville.
Good birding
