Trail work will limit Spencer Island access

OLYMPIA - Public access to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife's
(WDFW) property on Spencer Island near Everett will be limited Nov. 6-27
during a habitat and trail improvement project.

The Spencer Island trail north of the Union Slough bridge will be closed
during the improvement project. That's the only trail that provides foot
access to WDFW's property on the island.

Spencer Island is currently open for waterfowl hunting, and hunters can
still access the island by boat, said John Garrett, manager of WDFW's
Snoqualmie Wildlife Area, which includes Spencer Island.

"For safety reasons, we are closing the trail that leads into our property
while we make improvements to the area," Garrett said. "But waterfowl
hunters who can get to the island by boat can still hunt on WDFW's land
during the trail project."

A trail that leads to Snohomish County's property south of the access bridge
will remain open during the improvement project, said Garrett. Hunting is
not allowed on the county-owned portion of the island.

Spencer Island is a popular outdoor recreation site near Everett. WDFW owns
174 acres at the northern end of the island, while Snohomish County owns the
remaining 240 acres.
