Dennis,

The challenge of getting kids outdoors is a cause near
and dear to my heart. I currently participate in an
online forum (92,000+ members) of which the largest
number of members are between 13 and 18 years old. I
have initiated threads asking them to go outside and
find 3 things that are new to them, whether it is a
new smell, flower, or idea, and the response has been
incredible. These are kids whose sole purpose in life
is to sit in front of a video game for hours and
hours, and to get them to see the world with new eyes
makes my chest fill with pride.

Also, through me, my two nieces have been initiated
into the wonders of birding. I did not force it upon
them. Everytime I visited, I would spend a small
portion of my time outside with my binoculars, until
they got too curious and had to find out what I was
seeing. Now, they send me their bird lists.

As I've always said, "to learn about nature is to
begin to save it."
