Tweets - We got a big break in the weather this morning, as it was
relatively warm and almost completely devoid of precipitation. The water
level in the slough is up an astounding 2.2 FEET since last week. It was
pretty high; enough that we couldn't get to the boardwalk from the slough
trail, and high enough that the boardwalk sank beneath our feet. Boots
definitely required.

I was surprised that there were only 6 of us birding today; last week was so
fantastic, and there were 15 people then. Plus the weather was decent. Go
figure.

The birding started slowly, and most of the day it didn't seem that birdy.
But the species total grew quite respectably.

Highlights:

California Quail 4 near the model airplane field early
Horned Grebe A couple on the lake with Westerns
Sharp-shinned Hawk Nice small adult seen 2-3 times
R.-br. Sapsucker Near mansion
Hairy Woodpecker Male close along west edge of E. Meadow
Northern Shrike Juvenile north of grass fields 7-8-9
COMMON RAVEN 3 flew overhead
Varied Thrush Heard at S. end of E. Meadow
American Pipit A couple of flyovers
Townsend's Warbler 2+ SE of mansion
Purple Finch LOTS

A male ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD at the Pea Patch posed for ever so long while we
admired him.

The HAIRY WOODPECKER was working very low on a willow where ELWAS has been
clearing blackberries. It stayed there at least half and hour.

GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET numbers were notably high; we came across 3-4 flocks
of them, several away from the mansion area (their usual haunt). They were
always in mixed flocks with Black-capped Chickadees and Ruby-crowned
Kinglets. A flock near the east end of the boardwalk also included Brown
Creeper, Downy Woodpecker, Purple Finch, Bewick's Wren, Bushtit, and at
least 1 other species.

We got several great looks at flocks of PURPLE FINCH, including several nice
red males. They're still working the ash trees.

For the day, 59 species.
