Today Sherry Thiel and I ventured down to Astoria Oregon in search of
the Emperor Goose in which we found with very little searching. We
started at the west end of Airport Road and found the Cattle Egret
grazing in the field along with the cows. We then scanned the geese in
the field, but no Emperor. Drove a few hundred yards up the road,
scanned another flock of geese and along the fence line, there was the
juvenile Emperor Goose, along with 4 Greater White-fronted Geese. Also
seen in the area were a Northern Shrike, American Kestrel, Northen
Harrier, and Red-tailed Hawk. On our way back we stopped at the pier
with all the sea lions. We had 1 Western Grebe there.
Our last stop was made just west of Clatskanie in the farm lands. We
turned off Hwy 30 (It has a sign that says Jone's Beach), turned right
onto Marshland Rd. and eventually veered left onto Woodson. We had a
good variety of waterfowl in the flooded fields including a pair of
Cinnamon Teal. That took us to River Front Road where we turned right,
which brought us back to Hwy 30 at Port Adams Rd. Along River Front Rd.,
we had Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, Northern Harriers, and 2
White-tailed Kites, all seen in the fields.
