Hi Mary and Tweets,

A good resource for studying bird calls is BirdWeb, Seattle Audubon's
online guide to the birds of Washington state and their habitat. We
have audio for almost all of the commonly occuring sparrows in
Washington which were recorded locally and generously donated to BirdWeb
by Peter Ward and Ken Hall (from their "Songbirds of the Northwest" CD -
http://seattleaudubon.org/natureshop.cfm?id=704).

I suggest starting at the Spotted Towhee
(http://www.birdweb.org/birdweb/bird_details.aspx?id=404) and using the
links on the left under Family Members to work your way through the
sparrows taxonomically.

The one caveat is that our White-crowned Sparrow appears to be of the
oriantha ssp. which does have some traces of gambelli in it's song
(based on an evaluation by a WCSP researcher at UW). Still working to
find a nice, locally recorded pugentensis but that's one song that's
burned into everyones memory I am sure.

Enjoy!

Subject: [Tweeters] Birding in the Minot ND Area

I've registered for the ABA "Sparrows" field ornithology workshop taking
place in/near Minot ND in late June 2007.* Would appreciate any
info/tips re the area from those who've been there. Am also planning to
put together for myself a compilation of the area's birdsongs in order
to do a little tune-up before the trip. Any advice as to whether
Peterson or Stokes would be the better set to use? Is this an exercise
in futility in that there are too many regional dialects to be able to
rely on a "one size fits all"
compilation?? I've got a Minnesota birdsong CD, do you s'pose those
birds'd sound closer to the ND birds than Peterson/Stokes/etc.??

Many thanks,
Mary
