Patricia Thompson from 11-15-2006 Seattle Times: "Every fall (Great Horned
and Barred Owls) from Vashon Island to Bridle Trails State Park they strike
(people), which is strange, since fall is not the breeding season when
defense of nests would be logical....Oddly, I have not had a report this
year. Do they feel vindicated, or are you all just not telling me?" -

Hi Patricia,

I've had 2 or three reports of owls at least making threatening passes at
people this year. All seemed bunched around about 2 - 6 weeks ago. One I
clearly remember was a Barred Owl at Camp Long in West Seattle, but I can't
remember if the other one or 2 were. I've been seeing fewer and fewer Great
Horneds in recent years in the city. I'm suspecting that the Barred Owls
are somehow to blame. The only idea I could come up with is that it is some
kind of territorial thing. It does seem that these owls often have
relatively consistent winter perches that are different from their breeding
perches and often in areas that are different than the area that they raise
their young. My observation is that the adults and their young disperse
from the area the young had been fed in when the young stop being fed
somewhere around early to mid September.
