Just since yesterday morn, associated with our deep freeze, I've noted a
number of struggling songbirds:

Incident 1: a Ruby-crowned Kinglet, flitting about in some ornamental
Rhododendrons next to wide-glass entry doors at our office in Marysville,
took two passes at flying into the glass, veering off both times just before
impact. One had the distinct sense that it wanted to come inside.

Incident 2: a Song Sparrow has been hiding below our north deck and shed
repeatedly. It was actually seen warming itself near the vent on the north
side of the house that releases steam from the washer/dryer.

Incident 3: a Winter Wren took the Song Sparrow's example and decided to
sleep below the front porch. It flushed first thing this morn.

Incident 4: a Bushtit was seen hanging from the ceiling inside our office
building here in Marysville. It hung upside-down, motionless, from a spot
at which heat radiated from the vent, then flew off.

We've also noted that Deer Mice have been attempting to make nests for
warmth.

Tonight is sure to be a tough one, with lows projected in the mid-teens, at
least it appears the freeze should subside by Thurs.
