Subject: [Tweeters] A couple new users at my feeder

Late this afternoon while watching a lovely fluffed up Varied thrush in the
cedar outside my window a deer walked into my yard, walked right up to the
feeder, stood up on its hind legs and very expertly smacked the feeder with
its front hooves, knocking the feeder to the ground, where it licked up
seeds. I have found the feeder on the ground before and I assumed squirrels
were the culprits. I have heard of bears eating birdseed but never deer
before.

Then just after dark there was a large lump on my suet feeder which turned
out to be a flying squirrel, it looked up with its huge eyes. A phone call
distracted me and I was disappointed that I missed it soaring off. So the
mammals are joining the birds in taking advantage of this food resource
during the freeze. They seem to eat lots more than the birds do, so I will
have to make a seed run tomorrow before the next storm.

The water that I put out in the birdbath this morning was eagerly sought
after.
