While Mourning Doves are relatively common in the more drier, more open and
more prairie-like areas of western Washington / Puget Trough(and more so I
believe in Oregon), I see them relatively rarely in Seattle and consider
each sighting here noteworthy. For me a Seattle Mourning Dove is something
like a once or twice a year or two event. A few years one dropped down for
a bit at Camp Long in West Seattle in a little spot that was gravelly and
scrubby south of the south parking area before the debris that gave it a
more scrubby look was removed and the parking area expanded. I've seen them
a time or two on the gravelly or sandy open spots north of Husky Stadium by
Montlake Fill which would look like good Mourning Dove habitat if there was
a lot more gravelly or sandy and sparsely grassy area around there. I think
I may have seen them in another similar spot or two in Seattle over the last
decade. I believe our Mourning Dove population here is largely limited by
the amount of area we have here that looks more like eastern Washington and
Oregon where they are common and can can be spotted most often on the
telephone wires there. Parts of Kitsap and the north and east Olympic
Peninsula also fit this description and have a fair number of Mourning
Doves.

A neighbor mentioned that he saw a single mourning dove in his yard a
couple of days ago. It was the first time in the more than 40 years he's
lived here that he has seen one. We live just up the hill from the Mee Kwa
Mooks greenbelt along Puget Sound in West Seattle. Does anyone know the
status of these birds in this area and Seattle? ...
