Subject: [Tweeters] Tracyton Boat Ramp Tonight

After having seen the SURF SCOTERS from home this week I decided it was time
to check out the Tracyton boat ramp area near Bremerton, Kitsap County.

Neither species nor numbers are abundant yet, but I was delighted to see at
least two dozen COMMON LOONS in various stages of plumage. Several still
appeared to be totally alternate plumage, and still more were showing white
on their faces and mottling elsewhere. RED-NECKED GREBES' necks are getting
paler; HORNED GREBES aren't looking horn-y at all. It's interesting that
most of what I'm seeing are adult birds, grebe-wise, anyway. There were the
usual gull suspects (Glaucous-winged/Western Hybrids, or whatever our gulls
are), and a juvenile DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT. I saw at least eight SURF
SCOTERS, and one WHITE-WINGED SCOTER among them. Oh, and a couple dozen
basic-plumagey PIGEON GUILLEMOTS. It's amazing how quickly they molt from
alternate to basic.

That's all, good birding,
Mary
