Hello Tweeters,

Just a note that there are no ?gardener? snakes. They are
garter snakes. And there is no ?Stellar?s? Jay (like the stars). It is the
Steller?s Jay, named after Georg Steller who was on Vitus Bering?s historic
voyage to Alaska in 1741. Steller was a brilliant German-born scientist,
naturalist, botanist and physician on the expedition. Corey Ford?s book,
?Where the Sea Breaks Its Back?, published in 1966, and now out in
paperback, is a delightful story of the tragic and momentous expedition.

And, finally, an adjacent topic: When we were choosing a
Seattle City Bird, I had hoped it would not be the Great Blue Heron (the
ultimate winner). My choice would have been the Steller?s Jay (so people
could learn to spell it), or the Bewick?s Wren (so people could learn to
pronounce it ? like the car). Well, I guess you can?t win ?em all.
