Subject: [Tweeters] Marymoor Park Report (Redmond, King Co., WA) 2006-10-04

Tweets - most of the morning was rather cold and overcast, but just before
noon the sun came out and it was really very nice.

The day was a good one - lots of birds (though it took the sunshine to get
the species count up), and lots of birders.

Highlights:

Gr. Wh.-fronted Goose 3 with Canadas near velodrome
Northern Shoveler A few flew by
Horned Grebe A couple at the lake
Western Grebe Three at the lake
TURKEY VULTURE TWENTY THREE flying southwest
Peregrine Falcon One or more, several sightings, maybe a
Merlin too
Mourning Dove One at Pea Patch
Barn Owl Two just before 7:00
Anna's Hummingbird Two displaying males at Pea Patch
Hairy Woodpecker One east of 2nd dog swim area
American Pipit At least a dozen on grass soccer fields
7-8-9
Wh.-throated Sparrow TWO just east of 2nd dog swim area

We had many acciptiter sightings, including multiple COOPER'S HAWKS and at
least one (and probably more) SHARP-SHINNED HAWK.

The TUVUs were flying, mostly single file, in a straight line. We only saw
one circling (with an accipiter). This more than doubles the number of
Turkey Vultures I've ever seen at Marymoor (previously 17 birds spread out
over 12 sightings).

The WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS were our first for 2006 - last winter they
showed up until into December, then disappeared for the New Year. Today, we
had two together in the blackberries. One had very little white on it; ID
was based mostly on the bold, sweeping, buffy stripe over the eye. But on
close inspection, a hint of yellow at the lores could be seen, and the
throat was at least whitish (with clear delineations). The other bird was
briefly seen, but was more boldly marked.

For the day, 59 species.
