Tweets - as WOSNews 105 has been taking forever to get to people, I thought
I'd let you all know the upcoming Washington Ornithological Society field
trips:

Saturday, October 7th - Matthew Moskwik will lead a trip to high elevation
areas of Pend Oreille County, including Bunchgrass Meadows and Salmo
Mountain. Target species include northern goshawk, American three-toed
woodpecker, spruce grouse, white-winged crossbill, Bohemian waxwing, Boreal
chickadee and pine grosbeak. Other possible species include northern hawk
owl, northern pygmy owl, and black-backed woodpecker. This is probably the
best easily accessible site in the northeast to search for boreal owl.
Expect to be up for part of the night and be prepared for cold weather.

Saturday, October 21st-Brad Waggoner will lead a trip in Kitsap County
covering areas from Bainbridge Island to Point No Point. The focus for the
day will be waterbirds, shorebirds, and late fall migrants. Target birds
include yellow-billed loon, eared grebe, harlequin duck, long-tailed duck,
ancient murrelet, and rocky shorebirds, possibly including rock sandpiper.
Dress for the weather and bring spotting scope. Limit of six birders. For

Saturday, November 4th-Ken Knittle will lead a trip along the Columbia River
in southern Skamania County. Areas covered include Franz Lake NWR, Skamania
Landing, Bonnneville Dam, Stevenson, the mouth of the Wind River, and to
Underwood. This is the time of year two ancient murrelets showed up behind
Bonneville Dam and other rarities such as yellow-billed loon and
white-winged scoter. Bring warm clothes, and your food and drink. For

Saturday, November 18th-Gary Bletsch will lead a trip in Skagit County with
stops at Rosario Head, Rosario Beach, Green Point at Washington Park, and
March's Point. The focus for the day will be seabirds, and target birds
would include red-throated and pacific loon; Western, horned, and red-necked
grebe; all three cormorants; common murre, pigeon guillemot; rhinoceros
auklet; and marbled & ancient murrelets. Depending on what birds are
currently being seen, the day would finish with a stop at either the Samish
Flats (for raptors and shorebirds) or the Skagit Flats on Fir Island (for

Saturday, December 2nd-Andrew Emlen will lead a trip in Wahkiakum County
covering areas from Strong Park in Cathlamet to Grays Bay and Altoona, with
stops at Julia Butler Hansen NWR, the Skamokawa's Middle and East Valleys
and possibly Puget Island if unusual species have been present. The focus
for the day will be waterfowl, raptors, winter shorebirds and sparrows.
Target species will include common, and red-throated loon; Clark's grebe;
Canada, cackling and snow goose; wood duck, Eurasian wigeon, Eurasian
green-winged teal, long-tailed duck and the three Scoter species;
white-tailed kite; dunlin, black-bellied plover, greater yellowlegs,
sanderling and western sandpiper; marbled murrelet; barn owl; wild turkey;
American dipper; gray jay; and white-throated, Lincoln's and swamp sparrow.

Saturday/Sunday, December 2nd/3rd-Kraig and Kathy Kemper will lead a trip on
the Waterville Plateau in Douglas County. Areas covered will include Atkins
Lake, Mansfield, Bridgeport Hill Road, and Central Ferry Canyon. Additional
areas covered may include Bridgeport State Park, the Okanogan River mouth,
and Cassimer Bar in Okanogan County. Target species include sharp-tailed
grouse, Bohemian waxwing, American tree sparrow, lapland longspur, snow
bunting, gray-crowned rosy-finch and common redpoll. An additional morning
will be added for those participants willing to stay overnight in Omak.

WOS Field Trips allow members to explore places or revisit familiar haunts.
Each trip is open to a limited number of participants. Each member may join
up to four trips per year (excluding annual conference trips). Non-members
may attend as a member's guest once per year. Questions about field trips
