Subject: [Tweeters] A dead bird comes back to life
Date: Oct 6 20:53:34 2006

I had one of those magical moments today as a couple of young neighbor kids
came up holding a dead cedar waxwing on a paper towel. The bird had hit a
window and they wanted advice on how to honor it with a burial. I picked up
the towel and the bird flinched, and over the next several minutes, and to
the astonishment of my young audience, it rose up and perched, kind of
wobbly at first, on my finger. I got the bird to transfer to the older girls
finger and told her when it was ready, the bird would fly away. I went back
into the house to get my camera but when I had returned the bird had flown,
leaving behind two children with amazed looks on their faces.
