Subject: [Tweeters] 11 woodpeckers in yard Sunday!

Dear Tweeters,

Yesterday there were seven Red-shafted Flickers in my
yard at the same time. This is near Lyman (Skagit
County). The flickers were feeding on fallen pears,
and also probing the damp soil of our weedy front
pasture. Then, two Pileated Woodpeckers joined them! I
had never seen Pileated Woodpeckers feeding on the
ground like flickers. They really went to town on the
pears. Sometimes the Pileateds would climb up the
little pear trees, too. Later, they attacked my
utility pole, hacking some of the wood off the old
thing. Meanwhile, there was a Downy in the cottonwoods
and a Red-breased Sapsucker, quietly working a fir.
Eleven individual woodpeckers at the same time!

Yours truly,

Gary Bletsch
