As only a birder can do, I curled up last night with the newest WOSNews 105
and enjoyed the article on Sooty and Dusky Grouse by Michael Schroeder.

Today I was working in Port Angeles and it was so beautiful that I just had
to go up to Hurricane Ridge to check out the views all the way to Victoria.
Walking the paved loop I saw and heard exactly zero birds after 45 minutes
- truly hard to believe.

As I drove back down the road pondering the vagaries of birding, a long
male Sooty Grouse was feeding next to the road and was kind enough to be
right next to a pull-out. It was a very accommodating male that happily
showed off all sides. However, he wasn't quite kind enough to fan his
tail, so that I might actually count his 18 tail feathers versus 20 -
perhaps another day.
