On a cool, sunny Tuesday morning, MaryFrances Mathis and I did our monthly wildlife, mostly birds, survey for October on the China Creek Course at Newcastle. For those that don't know where Newcastle is you can find it at D7 on page 79 of the DeLorme Atlas. We saw/heard a total of 33 species. Some of the highlights were: a RED-TAILED HAWK being mobbed by a crow, COOPER'S HAWK, VIRGINIA RAIL heard in response to tape, HUTTON'S VIREO, 3 VARIED THRUSH, 3 AMERICAN PIPIT, 7 KILLDEER, 3 LINCOLN'S SPARROW, WESTERN MEADOWLARK and a CALIFORNIA QUAIL heard. We also saw 4 mule deer.
