I would recommend the Canon 400 5.6, unless you will be REALLY close
such as at a feeder. Otherwise, the 300 will just not have enough reach.
People who are serious about bird photography swear by the Canon 500mm f
4.0, but make sure you are sitting down if you ever check the price.
Regarding zooms, I find my Canon 100-400 zoom is great, until I try to
photograph birds. At 400 mm, the little loss of detail from the zoom is
apparent with birds, while with landscapes, people, etc. it just doesn't
