Hello Megan and Tweeters,

This is strange that no one mention the Nikon Lenses. All the birders who responding to my phtos ask always what Camera and lens I use.I got two Nikon lenses, the older Nikon F 1.4 300mm..And the new one Nikon ED F5.6 400mm as VR.For the price an the ED glass and use a teleconverter 1.5x I can easy photographing at a far distance. With the new N -80 where the Autofocus is superb. My on use the Nikon ED 300 f1.4 out do me all the time with always hand holding the camera.
Than weight is so importend to ,the Cannon 400 mm F4 is quite heavy and require sturdy tripod.Ok You also need the Scope for birding, how you able to handle all that equipment
The weight is a big factor to deciden what one can handle. When I realy pressed I been using my camera hand holding also.

Photos of the Snowy Egret from the Nisqually NWR in mid August 2006 can be accessed at the following link: http://www.pbase.com/godwit/snowy_egret

Hi Tweeters,

The proverbial question....best camera lens for birding in the range of about $1000 - $1200? Looking at Canon 300mm F4 IS, Canon 400mm F5.6, and maybe the Sigma 50-500 mm zoom? Opinions? I like the Canons, the 400 gets closer but doesn't have IS and is slower. The 300 has IS, is faster and auto-focuses with a teleconverter. Decisions, decisions!
