Today a group of us volunteers for the ?Cedar River Salmon Journey? program
led public tours to observe spawning salmon at Cavanaugh Pond in Renton. In
the limited time we had available between watching the fish and talking
about them, we also managed to observe:



American Wigeon

Eurasian Wigeon

Common Merganser

Gadwall

Pied-billed Grebe

Mallard

Glaucous-winged Gull

Great Blue Heron

Belted Kingfisher

Red-breasted Sapsucker

Northern Flicker

American Crow

Steller?s Jay

Spotted Towhee

Black-capped Chickadee

Bushtit



There are 4 possible stops along the Cedar on the ?Journey?, each staffed
with a group of trained volunteer naturalists. A highlight (besides
Cavanaugh Pond) is Landsburg Park, where naturalists guide tours of the
diversion dam and the new selective fish passage facility. These features
are located behind the gate to the upper watershed, in an area normally
closed to the public. Dippers are common here. For those short on time, or
not inclined or able to walk the ? mile or so the Cavanaugh and Landsburg
sites require, naturalists also staff two fish viewing locations in town:
Renton Library and Riverview Park.
