On Saturday morning October 28, we were awakened by a series of barking like vocalizations right outside our window. The vocalizations came from two different directions and consisted of two Wuff woof followed immediately by a third more emphatic Woof reminiscent of primates heard in the jungles of the Amazon or dogs barking. The calls were repeated about every 20 seconds for the next 5 minutes. This is the second time that we have heard the calls in the early morning. The first time I went outside with spotlight and caught a glimpse of a large unidentified owl fly into the darkness. Our property is in mature riparian habitat on the East Fork of the Lewis river which includes Cedar, Doug Fir, Big leaf Maple, Cottonwoods, etc. but I know of no records of Spotted owls recorded here previously. I am familiar with Owl calls having been involved with the UC Davis Raptor Center in the 80's but everytime I hear this barking call it stirs my senses and gladdens my soul.
