Subject: [Tweeters] Shorebirds resting on one foot

Yesterday, at Hell's Gate State Park (Idaho, immediately south of Lewiston),
we saw a Double-crested Cormorant perched on a post in the river. He had
his wings spread to dry in typical cormorant pose. He was also standing on
one foot, but the other wasn't tucked. He was holding it slightly forward
and spread, as though he were drying his toes. Why would he do that?

(By the way, it was a gorgeous day at the Park. There was, however, an
Idaho high school cross-country track meet going on when we arrived. We
naively went into the park to bird anyway. Not many birds in sight among
the crowd of people, unless you count the loony parents screaming at their
offspring to run faster.)
