Brad, It is sometimes possible to ID a woodpecker by it's drumming. A lot depends on some second guessing due to habitat, of course, but by listening to some good tapes of the different drums, you can learn to tell many of them apart.

i also saw what looked like a small white-breasted blackbird, but don't know what it was.

also heard, but did not see two woodpeckers. can a birder identify a woodpecker just from its rat-a-tat?
