Tweets,
Steve Caldwell and I birded from Tokeland to Westport yesterday. At Bottle Beach we found a juvenile Ruff. But when we first arrived there around 10:30 am, we scared up a large, barrel-chested, grayish raptor from one of the old pilings. It flew straight and powerfully to the east low over the mudflat and we soon lost it. I saw what I believed was a faint mustache stripe. We both independently concluded that the best possibility was a juvenile Gyrfalcon. While we know such a citing would be exceedingly early, and we are not aware of any records from this time, we wanted to mention it so that others might keep an eye out for the bird, whatever it ultimately proves to be.
Good birding,
Brien Meilleur
