During the Labor Day weekend Larry Moss and I went birding over Hwy 20 to Harts Pass and then to the Winthrop area. We started out Saturday birding along Martin Road in the Rockport area, then headed up to the Newhalem Aggregate Ponds just north of the Whatcom / Skagit County line. Our next stop was at Harts Pass where we spent a little time at Slate Peak and camped out at Meadows Campground.

The next morning we made our way to Winthorp and birded the Eightmile Creek and Cub Pass Roads (FR 5130 and FR 5220), and that evening we camped at Nice Campground. Monday we birded a little along Bear Creek Road a little southeast of Winthrop. There was lots of smoke hanging around due to the current forest fires in the area. Highlights of our trip were:

Black-throated Gray Warbler - along Martin Rd in Rockport

AMERICAN REDSTART - a singing male at the Newhalem Aggregate Ponds

At Slate Peak the raptors included - PRAIRIE FALCON, 2 American Kestrels, 2 Sharp-shinned Hawks, Coopers Hawk, 3 Red-tailed Hawks

THREE-TOED WOODPECKER (female) - at Meadows Campground

Great Horned Owl - Heard calling at Nice Campground

WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER - 2 birds (a male & female) 2 miles up the Cub Pass Road; 1 male 8 miles up Cub Pass Road

NORTHERN PYGMY OWL - 2 miles up Cub Pass Road

Vesper Sparrow - along Bear Creek Road

Nashville Warbler - along Bear Creek Road

Cheers and Good Birding;
