Hello Ulrich and All Tweeters,
We also have had many Black-capped Chickadees feeding many times a
day at our old sugar water hummer feeder, alternating with our Anna's
Hummers.
The feeder was a small (4 ounce) bottle with an angled glass tube out the
down-hanging mouth of the bottle. The Chickadees would hang upside down and
sip the sugar water from the round yellow bee protector on the tube.
Because of their physical swinging activity, the Chickadees knocked a lot of
the feeder contents onto the deck below. The feeder was preferred to the
plain water in a bath about 3 feet away. Finally the Chickadee feeding
aggression pulled the feeder down and broke it.
Our replacement feeder has a circular ring with four yellow feeding
flowers facing upward. This is very satisfactory for the Hummers, but
apparently unusable by the Chickadees over the past couple of months.
Has anyone else seen their Chickadees get hooked on Hummer sugar
water?
