On Labor Day (9/6/06), Kim Thorburn and I birded the
Colville STP and nearby areas. As it was a very warm,
hazy day we concentrated on shorebirding.

Fortunately, the Colville STP is still accessible, and
we quickly found PECTORAL SANDPIPER - 2, STILT
SANDPIPER - 3, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, LEAST SANDPIPER,
WESTERN SANDPIPER, SNIPE, SEMIPALMATED PLOVER - 2,
SPOTTED SANDPIPER, and KILLDEER. In the weedy margins,
we were rewarded with great views of a LINCOLN
SPARROW, as well as WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, SONG
SPARROW, VESPER SPARROW - 1, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT,
SAVANNAH SPARROW, and numerous AMERICAN PIPITS. As a
bonus, we glimpsed a distant PEREGRINE FALCON
quartering a nearby field.

Although we tried some patches of riparian vegetation
along Lake Roosevelt, we keep up empty on migrant
warblers and vireos. Just west of Flowery Trails Pass
we saw a pair of GRAY JAYs.

A couple of hours spent in Pend Oreille County
produced RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, BAIRD'S SANDPIPER, and
GREATER YELLOWLEGS at the McKenzie Bridge crossing.
However, Calispell Lake was deadly dull.

Although I won't duplicate reporting some of the same
birds that have been previously posted for last
Saturday's sightings at the migrant traps, I will add
that we saw a few additional birds.

Palouse Falls S.P. - WILSON'S WARBLER; PAC-SLOPE &
LEAST FLYCATCHER, PEREGRINE FALCON (on the Whitman
County side cliffs), MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER,
OLIVE-SIDED FLYCATCHER, WC & CHIPPING SPARROWs,
SPOTTED TOWHEE.

Hooper (Whitman Co.) - TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, WILSON'S
WARBLER, and a juvenile CLAY-COLORED SPARROW in the
midst of a large flock of Chipping, Vesper, and
Savannah Sparrows.

Finally, we were sure that we heard a EURASIAN
COLLARED DOVE a few times, but we could never obtain
a visual on it. If confirmed, the Euro Dove would be
first county record.
