I had the pleasure of watching a group of eight juvenile red-breasted
mergansers splash about at the very southern end of Olympia's East Bay, near
the culvert to Moxlie Creek. They were a little wary of me for a few
minutes, but soon ignored me in pursuit of small fish, which they showed
their aptitude for catching. They became really animated (and funny) when a
glaucous-winged gull landed, speculatively looking for some of their fish.
Their markings were like the adult female; I am not sure if that suggests
that they are all female as none of my field guides pictured juveniles (or
described them).
