Doug Watkins called me early this AM to say that he had an immature
Franklin's Gull at Blyn this AM, Judy Mullally and I were leading a field
trip to Sequim Bay this afternoon so we approached this with high hope. When
we assembled out trip it was raining at the south end of Sequim Bay so we
went to the north and didn't do Blyn until the last thing this afternoon and
by that time there were just 4 of us. We walked down to Jimmiecomelately
Creek from the east and saw two immature Franklin's Gulls. Then Judy and I
drove in to the west side and walked down to the Sequim Bayfront and saw 5!
A state bird for me and a Lifer for Judy. They were all immatures. On the
west side they were mixed with about 25 Bonaparte's Gulls and 50
Ringed-bills as well as good numbers of Black-bellied Plovers, Short-billed
Dowitchers, Western Sandpipers and Killdeer. Franklin's Gull is listed as a
4 in Knittle's list for Clallam.
We saw only the common birds the rest of the afternoon with few
shorebirds. The best find thanks to Judy's acute hearing were 5 immature
Purple Martins at 3 Crabs.
