I assume I was not the only one mildly astonished at Cameron Cox's
criticism of Dennis Paulson ("Ridgefield wader and mini-rant", 8
Sept.). Two big ironies here. First, Dennis has contributed more to
the understanding of field identification of animals than just about
anyone I know -- through his landmark shorebird books, master birding
classes and other classes and lectures, and websites, not to mention
his numerous publications (including descriptions of new species)
advancing the identification of dragonflies and damselflies.
Secondly, anyone wishing to bridge the divide between scientists and
birders has in Dennis an absolute model. I know of few people who
have done more to bridge this divide than Dennis, through his
contributions to both birding and science and his inspiring ability
to reach and teach people interested in both.
