Carol Ledford and I went to Ridgefield NWR today. We
bumped into a lot of birders there looking for the
Celebrity Birds.

We had a total of 51 species for the day.

Our best birds were:

RUFF (male and female); these birds moved around quite
a bit as did all the shorebirds. Our closest vantage
in excellent light (sometimes cloud cover and
sometimes full sunlight) was about 75yds. The two
were at times together making for great size contrast.
They were also at other times 100?s of yards apart.
They were seen from the blind as well as from the E
side of Rest Lake.

SHARP-TAILED SANDPIPER (juvenile); Our best view of
this sandpiper was on the S side of Rest Lake and we
had it in good sunlight from about 25-30 feet. That
close this bird was absolutely brilliant. We watched
it patiently walking / feeding / preening over about
30 minutes or so.

PECTORAL SANDPIPER - - at least 6 individuals all from
about 75 yds or less.

WHITE-TAILED KITE - - perched on a snag with a freshly
caught small rodent.

GREAT HORNED OWL - - perched and stretching / snoozing
on the NE section of the Kiwa Trail about 100 yds N of
the path.

SAND HILL CRANE - - at least 18 individuals. We saw
and heard them off and on throughout the day.
