Unfortunately, preying mantids appear to be here in good numbers over a large area. They are common at Scatter Creek Wildlife Area and the new West Rocky Prairie acquisition north of Tenino. I've seen them up the Skookumchuck near Thompson Creek and on Fort Lewis along Muck Creek.

What affect will they have on the native invertebrates.... the butterflies... and, for the sake of those who think this is a bird list serve.... the birds?

The only time I've ever seen a wild praying mantis was at the Mima Mounds two years ago (in the fall). There were 200+ Turkey Vultures flying overhead that day as well.
Where else have people seen praying mantises?

Simone
