The crow incident reminded me of a seagull I saw a few
months ago in the Stilly valley. It was diving into
fairly deep grass, then flying up and over a few feet
and diving again. It did this probably 6-7 times.
Unfortunately I was stopped in the middle of the road
and couldn't wait to see the end. I've wondered since
what it was doing but it didn't occur to me that it was
going after a rodent.

Then again, last winter in a flooded field near Edison,
there was a young seagull cruising around looking more
like a Harrier than a gull. As I watched, it swooped on
a weed sticking up and came away with a small rodent,
which it proceeded to eat in flight.
