Description:

Seabirds in north Puget Sound have suffered a 25% decline since the
1970's, including a 50% decline in the beloved Surf Scoter. This
troubling news is the result of a study designed and directed by Dr.
John Bower of Western Washington University. Over two years, Dr. Bower
worked with his college students to conduct monthly (or more frequent)
surveys from 150 land-based sites and three ferry runs! He will join us
at our April membership meeting to discuss this project.

The Seattle Audubon Science Committee has established the declining
seabird issue as a priority and is collaborating with Dr. Bower to
establish a region-wide long-term volunteer monitoring program of Puget
Sound marine bird populations. Dr. Bower is an entertaining and
informative speaker who recently returned from five months studying
endangered hummingbirds and seabirds on Isla Robinson Crusoe, 500 miles
off the coast of Chile.
