Hi Guy and Tweeters:
Neppel Landing Park and the directions to it (it's in downtown Moses Lake)
are well described in the Audubon Map called, "WA State Birding Trail,
Coulee Corridor Scenic Byway". It's the birding trail map that has the
Loggerhead Shrike on it. Neppel Landing is located at West Broadway and Ash
Streets, and overlooks an arm of Moses Lake. From I-90, take exit 176
(Moses Lake). Turn northeast onto hwy 171/West Broadway. Drive 2.5 mi.
Turn left (north) onto Ash St. Drive 1 block and turn right to parking lot.
Doug Schonewald showed it to us during a field trip during the Othello
Sandhill Crane Festival. We missed the Lesser Blk-backed that day, but it
was very cold and windy. We did get to see a Thayer's Gull, and several
Herring Gulls in various plumages at Neppel Landing. There were also many
kinds of ducks. You are looking down at the birds flying and perched. It's
a great place.
Doug Schonewald wrote a nice site guide about Moses Lake for WA Birder. It
was in the Spring 2004 issue, and was called Moses Lake Birding, Spring
Through Winter (I guess that means all year). The article is several pages
long, and it's great. It includes shorebirding too. The article and field
trip are so great, that I have decided to join Central Basin Audubon
Society. Sigh... I already belong to several other Audubon Societies...
It's a sickness, I guess.
Yours, Carol Schulz, Des Moines, linusq at att.net
