Yesterday 14 of us enjoyed a great walk of the outer dike at Nisqually. The
weather cooperated and was very nice but the tide was way out when we
reached Nisqually Reach and we couldn't ID a lot of what we saw out there.

All told we saw 70 species and added 6 new species to the year list. Some
of the highlight I missed but that is the way it happens sometimes.

Several of the participants saw 2 AMERICAN BITTERN behind the visitor center
before I arrived and Bob Stallcop had a CALIFORNIA QUAIL fly in front of his
car on the front access road as he entered the refuge.

Spring migrants were in great evidence as there were many flocks of
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS on the refuge. We also had a couple of ORANGE-CROWNED
WARBLERS with them, and we had our first COMMON YELLOETHROAT of the season as well.
We also had a flight of 8 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE fly in behind the twin
barns.

There were several CASPIAN TERNS out near Luhr Beach and MEW GULLS and
RING-BILLED GULLS were in the mouth of McAllister Creek as were HORNED GREEBES,
one almost in breeding plumage. Our only EURASIAN WIGEON was in the same area.

We located both adult GREAT HORNED OWLS in the vicinity of the nest tree but
never located the juvenile. It had to be in the area somewhere but we
couldn't locate it.

Mammals seen were a couple of RACCOONS and a HARBOR SEAL.
