Tweets,
What great excitement and camaraderie in the search for the elusive Arctic
Loon on Wednesday (as Ted Kenefick's post indicates)! The close-up views (70
yards?) from near the store around 4:15 or 4:30 were superb, but the view
that will stick with me was a long-range glimpse at around 2:00 or 2:30 from
the lighthouse parking lot way over toward the store about 3/4 of the way.
The loon was swimming directly at me when it dove, providing a direct "rump
shot" and showing the white flanks extending upward at the base of the tail
like a v-g swallow (only not so far). Ironically, this is exactly the way
Bob Sundstrom described it to me that morning. Unfortunately Bob was sick
and unable to make the trip. It was a gorgeous day to boot, with 80 species
for the day. Great fun!
Good birding!
