hi gang

yesterday heard the first swainson's thrush ( i thought i heard one a
couple of weeks ago, but the distance was too far and then i didnt hear
it again and i got to talking to someone and anyway - nothing until
yesterday, i heard one clear song, though weak - and then today they
were everywhere - i saw them in the tops of the tallest dougfirs and
flying between them and saw one closely, briefly, while he sang.

the swainson's thrush was the first bird that truly brought me into the
bird kingdom - i followed one's voice deep into the woods - i wasn't
even sure it was a bird that i followed - that was years ago and each
year since - an electrifying voice that reminds me - if it represents
what is real, then whatever it is that causes us to destroy it - our
cars and our wars - what we so mistakenly call the "real world" - is a
falsehood to which we owe no allegiance -

thrushes now
thrushes tomorrow
