Sunday April 22, 2007:
The Sunday Bird Walk went to the Nanaimo River Estuary. Among the highlights
were a SHORT-EARED OWL and two MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS. Twenty-one birders found
the following forty species: GREAT BLUE HERON, CANADA GOOSE, AMERICAN
WIGEON, EURASIAN WIGEON, MALLARD, HOODED MERGANGER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL,
BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON MERGANSER, NORTHERN PINTAIL, SHORT-EARED OWL, BALD EAGLE,
RED-TAILED HAWK, NORTHERN HARRIER, TURKEY VULTURE, OSPREY, RING-NECKED
PHEASENT, CALIFORNIA QUAIL, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WESTERN SANDPIPER,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, NORTHERN FLICKER, STELLER'S JAY, NORTHWESTERN CROW,
COMMON RAVEN, AMERICAN ROBIN, MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
EUROPEAN STARLING, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW,WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW,
DARK-EYED JUNCO, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD, BREWER'S BLACKBIRD, BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRD, AMERICAN GOLDFINCH, AMERICAN PIPIT, SAVANNAH SPARROW, VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOW.
An ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER was spotted inthe 200 block of Dawkins Lane in
Nanaimo.
Six GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen along Chambers Place in Nanaimo.
Three MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS were spotted at the Morningstar Golf Course near
French Creek.

Saturday April 21:
Two GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen in the 200 block of Dawkins Lane in
Nanaimo.
A parial albino AMERICAN ROBIN was seen in lower Lantzville.

Friday April 20:
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD chicks were seen along East Wellington Road in Nanaimo.
ANNA'S and RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS were seen nesting in the 700 block of
Quilchens Crescent in Nanaimo.

Thursday April 19:
A SORA was spotted at Buttertubs Marsh in Nanaimo.
A MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD was seen south of the Cassidy Airport in Nanaimo.

Wednesday April 18:
The Wednesday Bird Walk went to the Top Bridge Trail Regional Park in
Parksville. Among the highlights were the sighting of a VAUX'S SWIFT diving
and swooping in the sky, long great looks at a CASSIN'S VIREO, who was
gathering nesting material and a MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER gave some of us a
short quick look. We also saw a large number of RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS feeding
on the Salmon Berry and Red Flowering Currant. Fifteen birders found the
following thirty species:
MALLARD, COMMON MERGANSER, TURKEY VULTURE, BALD EAGLE, COOPER'S HAWK,
KILLDEER, VAUX'S SWIFT, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, BELTED KINGFISHER, DOWNY
WOODPECKER, NORTHERN FLICKER, CASSIN'S VIREO, COMMON RAVEN, VIOLET-GREEN
SWALLOW, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BEWICK'S WREN,
WINTER WREN, AMERICAN DIPPER, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, HERMIT THRUSH, AMERICAN
ROBIN, VARIED THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, MACGILLIVRAY'S WARBLER,
SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, PURPLE FINCH and PINE SISKIN.
Two GREAT HORNED OWL and a young GREAT HORNED OWL, one NORTHERN PYGMY OWL,
one TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, three TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE and a CASSIN'S VIREO were
seen at the end of Rivers Edge Road in Parksville.
A CHIPPING SPARROW was seen in the 200 block of Dawkins Lane in Nanaimo.
50 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen flying north over Gabrolia Island.

Sunday April 15:
An ALBINO AMERICAN ROBIN was seen at the end of East Wellington Road near
the Power Station in Nanaimo.

The Wednesday Bird Walk on April 25, 2007 will be going to the Shelly Road
side of the Englishman River Estuary, We will meet at the east parking lot
of The Parksville Civic and Technology Centre at Jensen Avenue and McCarter
Street at 9:00 a.m. in Parksville or at the parking area at the end of
Shelly Road on the oceanside of Highway 19A at about 9:10 a.m.

The Sunday Bird Walk on April 29, 2007 will be going to the Morrell Wildlife
Sanctuary weather permitting--winds, torrential rains and snow will deter
us!
Meet at the Bird Store at 9:00 a.m. or at the parking area at Morrell
Sanctuary off the Nanaimo Lakes Road at about 9:15 am.
