I just renewed my WA Recreational Use Permit and picked up a flyer from the counter about "Wild Turkey Spring Season," a publication of the state Fish and Wildlife. It's quite interesting (other than announcing the season from mid-April through May 31). Apparently three different varieties of Wild Turkeys have been introduced in the state. Eastern Turkeys on the west side in the Willapa Hills and environs, Merriam's Turkeys in the northeast corner and on the east slope of the Cascades north of Yakima and in Klickitat and Skamania counties,and Rio Grande Turkeys in the Blue Mountains and near the Spokane-Columbia River junction. They give some details on differentiating males and females.

As a King County lister I note that according to their map the Merriam's Turkey population southwest of Cle Elum comes within ca. 10 miles of Tacoma Pass! And that population seems to be growing rapidly. Maybe they'll slop over the crest one day.
