Subject: [Tweeters] Eurasian Collared Doves as invaders

Dear Tweeters,

Some of the Eurasian Collared Doves might indeed have
come from pet owners irresponsibly releasing them.
However, in Europe, they seem to have spread
naturally, or at least semi-naturally. I fondly
remember hearing Germans refer to these birds as
"Tuerkentauben" (Turkish doves) when I was over there
in the 1970's--just as we used to say "English
Sparrow."

These birds are certainly fit for survival. In western
Arabia, I searched in vain for African Collared Doves
(which, I believe, are the parent species of the
"Ringed Turtle Doves"). Everywhere I went, all I could
find were the Eurasians. I still wonder whether the
Eurasian Collared Doves had outcompeted the African
Collared Doves in that region, or if perhaps there was
something else going on there.
