Sunday April 29, 2007:
The Sunday Bird Walk went to Morrell Wildlife Sanctuary in Nanaimo.
Thirty-six
birders found the following twenty-nine species:
MALLARD, BALD EAGLE, GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, CALIFORNIA QUAIL,
BAND-TAILED PIGEON, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED
WOODPECKER, CASSIN'S VIREO, STELLER'S JAY, COMMON RAVEN,
CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, BROWN CREEPER,
WINTER WREN, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET,
AMERICAN ROBIN, VARIED THRUSH, ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER,
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, BLACK-THROATED GRAY WARBLER,
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SONG SPARROW,
WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, PURPLE FINCH and PINE
SISKIN.
Four GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS and a AMERICAN GOLDFINCH were seen in the 200
block of Dawkins Lane in Nanaimo.

Saturday April 28:
150 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE were seen flying over Departure Bay in
Nanaimo.
Five GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen in the 4900 block of Homestead Way in
Ladysmith.

Friday April 27:
One hundred and fifty DUNLIN were relaxing on the rocks of Eaglecrest Beach
in Qualicum Beach along with six BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS, a SHORT-BILLED
DOWITCHER and a SAVANNAH SPARROW.

Thursday April 26:
Two MERLIN were seen in the 2700 block of Neyland Road in Nanaimo.
GOLD-CROWNED SPARROWS, WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWS, HOUSE FINCH, CHESTNUT-BACKED
CHICKADEES, PINE SISKINS, GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, SPOTTED TOWHEES, RUFOUS
HUMMINGBIRDS and NORTHERN FLICKERS are visiting feeders in the Lynburn
Crescent area of Nanaimo.
Three GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS were seen in the 20th block of Prideaux Street
in Nanaimo.

Wednesday April 28:
The Wednesday bird walk went to the Englishman River Estuary-Shelly Road
side. Among the highlights were the sighting of three WILSON'S SNIPE along
the pond down from Mills Road, a GREATER YELLOWLEGS, two TOWNSEND'S
WARBLERS, and a singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER. Ten birders found the
following forty-three species:
CANADA GOOSE, AMERICAN WIGEON , BUFFLEHEAD ,COMMON GOLDENEYE, COMMON
MERGANSER, RED-BREASTED MERGANSER, RING-NECKED PHEASANT, PACIFIC LOON,
COMMON LOON, DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, GREAT BLUE HERON, BALD EAGLE,
KILLDEER, GREATER YELLOWLEGS, WILSON'S SNIPE, MEW GULL, CALIFORNIA GULL,
GLAUCOUS-WINGED GULL, BAND-TAILED PIGEON, RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD, BELTED
KINGFISHER, NORTHERN FLICKER, PILEATED WOODPECKER, NORTHWESTERN CROW,
COMMON RAVEN, VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW, CHESTNUT-BACKED CHICKADEE, RED-BREASTED
NUTHATCH, BEWICK'S WREN, WINTER WREN, AMERICAN ROBIN, EUROPEAN STARLING,
ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER,
TOWNSEND'S WARBLER, SPOTTED TOWHEE, SAVANNAH SPARROW,
SONG SPARROW, DARK-EYED JUNCO, RED-WINGED BLACKBIRD,
BREWER'S BLACKBIRD and a BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD.

Tuesday April 24:
A SAY'S PHOEBE was seen in the San Pariel area of Parksville near the mud
flats.
Two BAND-TAILED PIGEONS, ten GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROWS, two CHIPPING SPARROWS,
a PILEATED WOODPECKER, over 15 PINE SISKINS, two VARIED THRUSH and over two
RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS, were seen in the 1500 block of Grafton Road in
Errington.

Sunday April 22:
Four BAND-TAILED PIGEONS were seen in Deerwood Estates, Nanaimo.

Friday April 20:
A RINGED-NECK PHEASANT was seen in a field near Cedar Road by Hill Road in
Cedar.

The Wednesday Bird Walk on May 2, 2007 will be going to the Beaver Ponds at
Nanoose Bay, We will meet at the east parking lot of The Parksville Civic
and Technology Centre at Jensen Avenue and McCarter Street at 9:00 a.m. in
Parksville or at the parking area just past the four way stop on Power Point
Road. To get to the Beaver Ponds turn onto Northwest Bay Road at the
Petro-Can Gas Station on Highway 19 and follow Northwest Bay Road past the
railway tracks. Turn right onto Power Point Road and follow Power Point
Road to about 150 feet past the four way stop, going into Fairwinds. Park in
the parking area to the left at about 9:20 a.m.

permitting--winds, torrential rains will deter us!
Meet at the Bird Store at 9:00 a.m. or at the parking area near the Living
Forest Campground on Maki Road off highway 19a near the Southgate Mall in
south Nanaimo at about 9:20 am.
